Once they have a clear picture in mind of where they're going, successful entrepreneurs create a plan to get there - beginning where they are now with what they have. It does not have to be a long or complicated plan, but I don't know of a single person who achieved sustainable success professionally or personally without one. Developing the entrepreneur's discipline to focus on those few, simple daily actions that lead to success will get easier if you'll commit to practicing and make it a habit to stick to your plan, no matter how many distractions get in your way.
Here are a few practical steps to help get you moving forward with a crystal clear sense of direction. Go back to that "ideal scene" you envisioned and decide what you want in each area of your life - financial, physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and relational. This process can take a while, and will very likely evolve over time. That's okay, just start somewhere. Quickly write your goals down on paper without spending too much time trying to edit yourself. Be as specific as you can with each one. As you review this list each day, you can make notes to refine it and further define your goals. The more specific you are from the beginning, the closer you'll be to achieving your objectives, but don't get bogged down trying to make the list perfect.
Set a reasonable deadline for each goal. Again, don't allow yourself to get lost in complex calculations. Just look at each one and ask yourself "how much, by when?" You can always revise as you go, but reason this step is important is that on bigger goals, you'll have to break them down into manageable pieces. Nobody writes an entire novel in one sitting. The author E.L. Doctorow said that "writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." An entrepreneur's business plan does the same thing. You may not be able to physically see or touch your objective right now, but there are small action steps you can take in this moment and the next to move you closer.
Too many people use the size of their dreams as an excuse not to take action on them, and sadly, those dreams will always remain out of reach in the future. Successful people use a business plan to figure out what small pieces CAN be done and then take inspired action on those pieces immediately. Thoughts and words alone will not bring you the success you're seeking.
